A Lifeline Restored - But the Work Is Not Done 💜

Advocacy services have returned, but survivors across Detroit’s Eastside still need more support than one part-time advocate can provide.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to uplift survivors, raise awareness, and remind our community of our commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to safety, support, and healing.

Across Detroit’s Eastside, survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence are still

searching for safety, support, and someone they can trust. After months of uncertainty and a pause caused by federal funding cuts, our Domestic Violence Advocacy Program is back in motion, but not yet at the level our community needs.

In 2025, when fully staffed, our two Domestic Violence Advocates supported 362 survivors in just five months, providing safety planning, PPO navigation, and critical support during moments of crisis. Then federal funding cuts forced the program to shut down.

We are deeply appreciative of those who supported our previous fundraising campaign and showed their care for survivors and this important program. Where we once had two full-time advocates serving the 5th and 7th precincts, we now have one part-time advocate supporting survivors across both. While we are grateful to have services restored, the need continues to far exceed our current capacity.

Our goal is to restore two full-time advocates, one in each precinct, because survivors should not have to wait, safety should not depend on availability, and help should always be there.

Our program meets survivors where they are. We assist with:

  • Understanding and navigating the PPO process

  • Securing safe housing and shelter

  • Accessing trauma counseling and legal aid

  • Safety planning and crisis support

  • Navigating the justice system

  • Connecting survivors to resources and next steps

Importantly, survivors do not have to work with police to receive help. They can contact our advocates directly:

How You Can Help 💜

We are inviting our community, partners, and stakeholders to help us rebuild this critical lifeline. Every day, survivors reach out for help, seeking safety, guidance, and a way

forward. We know what this program can do when fully resourced. We have seen the impact, and we are committed to getting back there.

Your support will help us:

  • Expand advocacy services from part-time to full-time

  • Increase access to protection orders, safety planning, and critical resources

  • Ensure no survivor is left waiting or forced to navigate this alone
